Punjab Diwali celebration

Diwali is a festival of lights and it is celebrated all over India. However, in Punjab Diwali celebration is a massive function and it is celebrated as Bandi Chor Diwas. Also, Diwali in Punjab marks the beginning of winters and considered as the time of year when farmers start preparing for the farming season and sow the first batch of seed.

Bandi Chor Diwas is celebrated in a manner similar to Diwali in Punjab. Punjab Diwali celebration holds a great history behind it. And this festival in Punjab is celebrated with great joy and firework display. The Shri Harmandir Sahib decorated with lights and diyas. The whole temple organizes continued Kirtan singing and prayers and all Sikh families considered this occasion as an important time to visit Gurudwaras and spend their time with prosperous Gurbani.

History and significance

In the rule of Mughal Emperor Jahangir, everyone was tortured to change their religion and he also arrests Guru Arjan Dev Ji and asked to convert him to Islam. Guru Arjan Dev Ji refused this order and he was tortured and executed in 1606 CE. After the execution, Guru Hargobind Ji succeeded as next Sikh guru on 24 June 1606, at the age of 11.

Guru Hargobind ji advised Sikh to arm and fight with Mughal. As a result, he built a format court near Amritsar, Akal Takht. Then Mughal Emperor Jahangir imprisoned Guru Hargobind Ji at Gwalior Fort in 1609. At the day of the Diwali, its time to release Guru Hargobind Ji and then they demanded the release of other princes along with his release. Jahangir agreed but the condition was; only the prisoners who hold Guru Hargobind Ji’s cloak would be allowed to go.

Then Guru Hargobind Ji designed a special cloak with 52 strings and he walked out of the prison with other 52 princes holding onto the strings on his cloak. This is Historic day and is celebrated as Bandi Chor Diwas.

Then Punjab Diwali celebration is elaborated as the anniversary of the release of Guru Hargobind Ji. The tradition of lighting lamps on this day is a way to pay respect to god for the attainment of peace, prosperity, and health.

In Punjab, each city, town, and village celebrates the occasion with a lot of enthusiasm. Fairs are conducted all over the state and people enjoy delicious food and enjoy rides.
