What Causes Sciatica & its Treatment?

Sciatica is a common type of pain that affects the sciatic nerve that extends from the lower back and down toward the back of both legs. The nerve called sciatic nerve is one of the longest and thickest nerves of the human body. Moreover, this sciatica nerve is also known as lumbar radiculopathy.

Causes of sciatica 

Sciatica is mainly caused by a herniated disk in the human spine that presses on the sciatic nerve. Apart from that, it is also caused by various reasons. They are: –

To get relief from pain, the patient is given the following medication like corticosteroids, anti-seizure medications, opioids, anti-inflammatories, antidepressants, etc. 

2. Physical therapy

Once the patient gets free from pain, doctors plan a program to prevent future injuries. That means doing exercises to correct the posture, improve the range of motion, and strengthen the core.

3. Steroid injections

If none of the above methods work, the patient is treated with steroid injection. A shot of corticosteroid medication into the affected area is given, which reduces the pain. 

4. Surgery

Surgery is the last step which is done on the patient in which the surgeon will remove the bone spur of the herniated disk, which is pressing on the nerve. But surgery is only done when the issue of sciatica causes severe weakness and pain that doesn’t improve with various other treatment methods.
